This series, sponsored by the College, brings emerging writers to campus to read with a University of Chicago student. The student is chosen by the visiting writer based on anonymous submissions.

HALLE BUTLER is a National Book Foundation "5 Under 35" honoree and one of Granta's Best Young American Novelists. Her first novel, Jillian, was called the "feel bad book of the year" by the Chicago Tribune, and The New Yorker called her second novel, The New Me, a "definitive work of millennial literature."

SAWAKO NAKAYASU is an artist working with language, performance, and translation – separately and in various combinations. She has lived mostly in the US and Japan, briefly in France and China, and translates from Japanese. Her books include The Ants, Mouth: Eats Color – Sagawa Chika Translations, Anti-translations, & Originals (a multilingual work of both original and translated poetry), and Costume en Face (a translation of a handwritten notebook of Tatsumi Hijikata’s dance notations). She is co-editor, with Lisa Samuels, of A Transpacific Poetics, a gathering of poetry and poetics engaging transpacific imaginaries. She teaches at Brown University.

FRANCISCO CANTÚ is a writer, translator, and the author of The Line Becomes a River, winner of the 2018 Los Angeles Times Book Prize and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in nonfiction. A former Fulbright fellow, he has been the recipient of a Pushcart Prize, a Whiting Award, and an Art for Justice fellowship. His writing and translations have been featured in The New Yorker, Best American Essays, Harper’s, and Guernica, as well as on This American Life. A lifelong resident of the Southwest, he now lives in Tucson, where he coordinates the Field Studies in Writing Program at the University of Arizona.
